The Charter Township of Union traces its history and its name to the Civil War. A month before the first shots of war rang out at Fort Sumter, shots that tore a nation in two, the original and patriotic Board of Supervisors formally established Union Township on March 9, 1861. They left no doubt where they stood on the upcoming hostilities. They were on the Union side.

In 2011, the Charter Township of Union celebrates its 150th year of existence. Once a beautiful pine and hardwood forest and the winter home of the Chippewa tribe, the area that became Union Township would become the center of lumbering, commerce and a fledgling oil industry in Michigan that became a state in 1837.

The first white settlers came to Union Township in 1854 when pioneer John Hursh and his family arrived in the area. Various settlements in the 36 square miles of the original township have long disappeared or been absorbed by the City of Mount Pleasant that lies in the center of Union Township. Mount Pleasant was designated the county seat in 1860 just a year after Isabella County was established in 1859. Mount Pleasant became a village in 1875 and later a city in 1889.

The history of the city at its core, and Union Township that surrounds it, has been bound together since they were both founded.
